Participant's role: Prime Mover, Bulgarian-Greek reference area study

Description of Participant role:

Prime Mover and WP4 sub-workpackage manager for the Bulgarian-Greek reference area study with contributions to a joint water resources management system in the trans-boundary river basin of Nestos. Definition of infrastructure requirements and pilot tests for an integrated monitoring and controlling system based on a hydrological/agricultural and water pollution/environmental data base. Development of regional scenarios and assessment of risks in establishing a new water policy for a joint trans-boundary cooperation with Bulgarian authorities in line with EC-Directives and CAP-provisions. AUTH will be also involved in WP1 Awareness Creation (implementing the BG/GR Steering Committee), WP2 Requirement Specification and WP7 Dissemination by communicating the project and relevant results to local/regional/national as well as Bulgarian authorities and interested parties especially coming form agriculture and regional economic/industrial development.

The main contribution to the project refers to detailed analysis of the anthropogenic impact in relation to the technically influenced water ecosystems and its effect on social development and economic growth in the Nestos river area. Special attention will be given to scenarios for sustainable development in the area in the view of new market conditions and local self-government. Work will be based on the integrated trans-national water management model and decision making system incorporating social, rural economic, environmental criteria.
